Kathryn Critchfiield Obituary

It is with a heavy heart and sadness that Kathryn Louise (Shippey) Critchfield, 82, of Boswell, PA, has gone to heaven. The lord giveth her to this earth on May 16, 1938. Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Olive Shippey, her youngest son Paul Critchfield, her niece Felicia Jean, granddaughter Leigha’s fiancé Gary Paddock, and the father of her children William Critchfield Jr. She is survived by her first born, William Critchfield III and wife Becky (Werder) and their two children William IV (Will) and Sarah, of Buckhannon, WV; her second born, Elizabeth Critchfield of York, PA; her two grandchildren that she raised, Leigha and Dakota Critchfield of Boswell, PA; her brother Arthur Shippey and wife Laurie of Maumee, OH; her sister Sandy (Shippey) and husband Jake Barkley of Friedens, PA; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was a 1956 graduate of JBJ High School in Boswell where she was a drummer in the marching band. She later completed her Associate’s Degree at Cambria-Rowe Business College. When she joined the workforce she worked at the ugly duckling rent-a-car and later as a tax assessor. Although, the job she cherished most was that of a stay-at-home mother to her three children and later as a retiree raising two of her grandchildren. Anybody that knew her knows that she was very opinionated, had a great sense of humor, and was a wonderful friend to all. She was a diehard Democrat and an inventor of cleaver previously unheard-of one-liners. She had many hobbies, including gardening, reading the papers, watching the news, and visiting her family. She was also very proud to serve as a council member for the Boswell Borough and as a deaconess at Sipesville Church of Brethren. She loved her dog Stuart (AKA the good boy), who passed away 2.5 years ago at 14 years old, as well as her surviving two Jack Russell terriers, Izzy and Bella. She quit drinking when she was 18 years old after being sick for a week; a story often recited to her family when there was a drink in hand. Two years ago, she fell and broke her leg, which ended up being a blessing, as she described it, because the doctors discovered she had multiple myeloma and breast cancer. She was very proud to receive her Certificate of Completion for radiation. She often said, “If I beat breast cancer just to die from Covid I’m gonna be pissed.” She never did get Covid and was certainly happy about that. Her family wished for more time, but she made sure to let all know that she “had a good ride.” Kathryn passed away peacefully in her home after a week being surrounded by family. The lord taketh her away on April 11, 2021. Services will be held on April 17, 2021 at Sipesville Church of the Brethren. There will be a viewing from 12:00-2:00 with the funeral to follow immediately after. Pastor Cecil Lohr will officiate her interment. Food will be available after the service. All are welcome. Her only requests were no ripped jeans, unless you are shot on the way, and no drinking. Donations can be made to the Sipesville Church of the Brethren 711 Sipesville Rd, Somerset, PA 15501. Arrangements made by George E. Mason Funeral Home of Davidsville.
